TRI COLLABORATORS (continued)

John Knight, M.D. is Director of the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research at Children's Hospital Boston and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.  Widely recognized as an expert on adolescent substance use issues, Dr. Knight’s research is directed at developing an effective brief intervention for drug abuse that could be widely implemented in settings where adolescents receive routine healthcare.  He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board to TRI’s Parents’ Translational Research Center.

National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP): Douglas Marlowe, J.D., Ph.D. is NADCP Director of Policy and Science along with Senior Scientist at the Treatment Research Institute where he works with investigators from the TRI Section on Law & Ethics to conduct research and translate findings into tools for the drug court field.  NADCP is a national organization dedicated to improving the justice system through judicial monitoring of and effective treatment for drug involved offenders.

National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL): TRI and this organization collaborate on educational workshops for state legislators providing science-based information to assist in developing effective public policy response to issues of addiction and substance use.  Along with Project Director David Friedman, Ph.D. from Wake Forest, and co-director Sue Rusche from the National Families in Action, TRI and NCSL, in the person of Allison Colker, J.D., are partners on the Addiction Studies Program (ASP) for the States. 

Partnership at Drugfree.org: (formerly the Partnership for a Drug Free America) is a non-profit organization helping parents prevent, intervene in or seek treatment when their children are using or abusing drugs or alcohol.  The Partnership at Drugfree.org creates and promotes online and offline educational tools for parents, sometimes with TRI involvement (ie, A Parents Guide to the Teen Brain and Time to Act!), and is a translation/dissemination collaborator on the Parents’ Translational Research Center at TRI. 

Sue Rusche is the co-founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Families in Action (NFIA), a not-for-profit organization founded in 1977 and dedicated to helping parents prevent children from using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.  Ms. Rusche is co-Director of the NIDA-funded Addiction Studies Program for the States, providing (with TRI collaboration) science-based information to legislators and executive branch policy makers at the State level.  She created and directed the Parent Corps pilot program and is directing the But What about the Children? campaign, calling for protecting children’s health through provisions in any law legalizing marijuana.

Daniel A. Santisteban, Ph.D., a recognized leader in blending adolescent research and practice at the national and state levels, Dr. Santisteban is Research Professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies Center of Excellence in Health Disparities Research at the University of Miami.  Published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, his many areas of expertise include family relations and family therapy, adolescent behavior problems, treatment development, cultural competence in working with minority families, and drug use treatment and prevention.  Dr. Santisteban is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board to the Parents’ Translational Research Center at TRI.

School of Public Health; University of Maryland:  Amelia Arria, Ph.D., TRI Senior Scientist and Scientific Director of the Parents’ Translational Research Center at TRI, is a Senior Scientist at this school of public health where she is Principal Investigator on the NIDA-funded College Life Study.

Catherine Stanger, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas and Research Scientist at the Center for Addiction Research, University of Arkansas School of Medicine.  Her research interests include parenting interventions, substance abusing families, and adolescent substance abuse. Principal Investigator of the NIDA-funded Family Based Contingency-Management for Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, Dr. Stanger is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board to the Parents’ Translational Research Center at TRI. 

Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D.:  At Temple University, Dr. Steinberg is the Laura H. Cornell Professor of Psychology and Distinguished University Professor.  He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board to the Parents’ Translational Research Center at TRI; researcher and expert on adolescent development and parenting issues, and is extensively published on adolescent parenting and adolescent risk taking issues.
