The Treatment Research Institute (TRI) is a non-profit research and development group specializing in science-driven transformation of addiction and substance use practice and policy. Co-founded in 1992 by A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., Jack Durell, M.D. and others from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Studies of Addiction, today TRI is at the forefront of many of the science-driven innovations that have improved prospects for patients living with the chronic disease of addiction to drugs or alcohol, or whose use of these substances has compromised their lives. More.

A core group of senior investigators and administrators has contributed to the state-of-of-the-art science and translation that have increased TRI’s influence since its founding in 1991. A directory and contact information for these senior staff along with their research and administrative support teams is available here.

TRI is predominantly funded through investigator-initiated grants, some federal, state and local contracts, and foundation awards. Individual tax-exempt donations can support the many unfunded activities of the organization.

TRI is governed by a Board of Directors whose members are experts in addiction, substance use and related fields.

Career opportunities at TRI are varied, recurring and mentor-driven, with an emphasis on preparing for a career where translation, dissemination and stakeholder education are paramount.

In conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, TRI offers post-doctoral research fellowships for qualified individuals interested in establishing a career as an independent researcher in the addiction or substance use field.

The offices of TRI are housed in the historic Public Ledger Building in Philadelphia, directly across from Independence Hall. Directions are available on-line or by contacting a member of the staff.
